The cupellation furnace is laboratory equipment used for the separation and determination of precious metal content. It is commonly used for the analysis and testing of precious metals such as gold and silver, for example in mining, trade, or the jewelry industry.
The cupellation furnace works by heating the test substance (usually a mixture containing precious metals) with a mixture of metals such as lead at high temperatures. This causes the precious metals to react and be absorbed into the lead, which is then separated from impurities through cooling and solidification, resulting in the purity and content of the precious metal.
